Solar for an older Croxley Green home: a retrofit checklist

An older house can be a candidate for solar, but its age alone does not establish roof strength, electrical condition or usable space. Start with the building as it stands today, including extensions, repairs and alterations. A neighbouring installation is a useful question to raise, not proof of suitability.

Tell the installer about leaks, slipped tiles or planned replacement work. Ask what has been inspected and whether a roofing specialist needs to assess anything further. Clarify how panel mounting interacts with the covering and any existing roof warranty.

Where renewal is already planned, compare doing the work together with separate projects. Record responsibility for scaffolding, weatherproofing and the handover between contractors. Include the cost of future panel removal if a repair is likely during the system’s life.

Ask for a drawing showing usable panel positions, obstructions and maintenance access. Chimneys, rooflights and extensions can divide a roof into sections with different shading. Compare expected annual generation from each feasible design rather than simply choosing the highest panel count.

If additional electronics are recommended to manage shade, ask what benefit has been calculated and what maintenance implications follow. Equipment selection should respond to the roof assessment, not a blanket rule that every older property needs the same upgrade.

Agree the inverter position, cable route and access to isolation equipment. The installer should inspect the existing supply and consumer unit and explain any required changes. Mention an EV charger or heat pump you expect to add later so the assessment includes future demand.

For battery storage, discuss the proposed location before accepting a product package. The installation needs to meet the applicable electrical, safety and manufacturer requirements. A spare cupboard or loft is not automatically an appropriate location.

Give the council or adviser the intended panel layout and associated equipment details. Keep planning permission, listed-building consent where relevant, and private property consents as separate checks. An unobtrusive design does not itself prove that permission is unnecessary.

Ask for the roof findings, proposed layout, generation estimate, equipment, installation scope and unresolved dependencies in writing. If roof work is required first, the project programme should make that sequence clear. Check which company is responsible for each warranty.
