What does a home battery actually do?
A home battery stores electricity and releases it later. With solar, it can move some daytime surplus into evening use. It does not generate extra solar energy or carry summer production through the winter. The useful starting question is which electricity purchases you want to avoid or shift.
For a household away during much of the day, storage may help align generation with demand. But the benefit still depends on available surplus, battery size, losses and the prices you pay for imports or receive for exports.
How do kWh and kW differ?
Usable capacity in kilowatt-hours describes the energy you can take from a charged battery. Power in kilowatts describes the rate it can supply. A battery can hold enough energy for an evening yet have insufficient discharge power to serve several large appliances simultaneously.
Ask for both figures, any reserve setting and the operating limits used in the quotation. Give the installer examples of concurrent loads, such as cooking and EV charging. A capacity chosen only from bedroom count can miss the way your home actually operates.
Can storage be added to existing solar?
Compatibility depends on the installed inverter, electrical design and proposed battery. An AC-coupled retrofit and a change to a hybrid inverter are different options with different work involved. Ask the installer to explain why it recommends one approach and which existing equipment will be retained.
Provide model numbers, commissioning records and details of any Feed-in Tariff or export arrangement. Check how alterations affect warranties, metering and tariff conditions before replacing equipment. Keep the original records as well as the documents for the new work.
How should a tariff comparison work?
Compare the cost of energy used to charge the battery, conversion losses and the value of the electricity later supplied. For solar charging, account for export income you give up. For grid charging, use the relevant cheap and peak periods and any conditions attached to the tariff.
A higher export rate can change the economics of storing solar. An EV tariff can also change the household’s charging priorities. Ask for a whole-home comparison rather than an isolated saving that ignores the rest of the bill.

Will it power the home during an outage?
To act as a backup power source in a power cut, the system must be specifically designed and configured to supply the agreed loads. Ask which circuits remain powered, the power limit, the reserved capacity and how changeover works. A battery advertised as backup-capable may need additional equipment.
The location and electrical connection also need a professional assessment. Agree who handles the relevant network process and any supply work. Storage should be designed as part of the installation, not treated as an appliance that can be placed anywhere.
