Does being near the canal change solar suitability?
The setting does not determine a roof’s direction, shade or structural condition. A home near the Grand Union Canal needs the same property-specific assessment as another address. Start with the roof you can actually use and the electricity demand you want to serve.
If nearby trees, buildings or the roof’s own features create shade, explain that when enquiring. Do not assume an attractive open view at ground level means the roof receives unobstructed daylight throughout the year.
What should a shading assessment explain?
Ask the installer to identify the sources of shade and include their effect in the annual generation estimate. Trees, chimneys, dormers and neighbouring buildings can affect different parts of an array at different times. A summer photograph is not a full seasonal assessment.
Request a drawing of the proposed usable roof sections. If one section is heavily affected, compare leaving it unused with adding panels and associated electronics. The relevant comparison is the additional generation and cost, not the appearance of a full roof.
Can optimisers or microinverters solve the problem?
These devices may help manage certain electrical effects of uneven panel output, depending on the design. They cannot create sunlight blocked by a tree or building. Ask what has been modelled for the particular roof and how much improvement the installer expects.
Compare the extra installed cost, monitoring capability and maintenance implications. Avoid treating a brand name or the word optimiser as a substitute for an estimate that shows the effect of shade. Your installer should explain the proposed arrangement in plain terms.
Should a nearby tree be altered?
Do not plan tree work simply to meet a solar estimate. Establish ownership, any protection and the relevant permissions before discussing changes. A tree outside your property may be beyond your control, and the system should not rely on an unagreed future removal.
Use the correct authority for the address: Three Rivers for Croxley Green and Watford for Cassiobury or West Watford. Conservation areas and protected-tree rules require address-specific checks. Ask the council where the situation is uncertain.

How does reduced generation affect a battery?
A battery stores available electricity; it cannot compensate for energy that was never generated. If the roof has limited surplus, ask how often the proposed storage would be used and what assumptions are made about grid charging.
Compare solar-only and solar-with-storage scenarios using the same shading assessment. Include conversion losses and the export income given up. The useful size of battery depends on available energy and demand, not simply the largest capacity that fits the budget.
What should you send with an enquiry?
Provide your postcode, roof photographs if available, annual electricity use and a description of known shading. Mention planned roof work, a battery or an EV. Photographs can help an initial conversation but should not replace an on-site or otherwise suitable assessment.
