Solar panels and heat pumps: plan two different jobs together

They do different jobs. Solar photovoltaic panels convert daylight into electricity. An air source heat pump uses electricity to transfer heat from outside into the home. One generates electricity; the other provides heating. Choosing between them starts with the problem you need to solve.

If the immediate priority is replacing an ageing heating system, a heating assessment may come first. If the roof is suitable and you want to reduce electricity imports, solar may be worth assessing. A joined-up plan can consider both without pretending they are interchangeable.

Solar can contribute when generation coincides with the heat pump’s electricity demand. It does not guarantee that the heating system will run without grid imports. Heating demand is often greater in the colder months, when available solar generation is lower.

Ask for monthly generation and heating-demand estimates where the combined system is being modelled. Annual totals can conceal a seasonal mismatch. A home battery moves energy between times of day; it is not a practical store of summer generation for winter.

A heating specialist should assess the building’s heat demand and the proposed distribution system, controls and hot-water arrangement. Ask how the design responds to the actual property rather than relying on a standard package based only on bedroom count.

Explain existing comfort problems and planned building improvements. Where insulation or other fabric work is appropriate, discuss how it changes the proposed heating design. Solar should not be used as a reason to avoid resolving an unsuitable heating system.

Tell the solar installer about the proposed heat pump, any EV charging and existing storage. The combined demand can affect equipment and supply considerations. Agree which contractor coordinates the electrical assessment and any communication with the network operator.

Ask for inverter, battery and monitoring choices to be explained in relation to the wider plan. Equipment described as smart or compatible still needs a defined control strategy. Identify how the home prioritises loads and who supports integration problems.

Keep solar installation, heating work and optional battery storage as separate lines. Ask for the underlying energy assumptions for each proposal. A combined headline saving can be difficult to assess if it compares different heating fuels, tariffs or operating temperatures without explanation.

Funding programmes also serve different purposes and carry separate conditions. Use current official scheme information rather than assuming that support for a heat pump covers rooftop PV. Three Rivers’ home-energy funding route has its own assessment process.

Prepare recent electricity and heating usage, basic roof information and a list of planned changes. Ask for a clear sequence covering building work, heating assessment, electrical checks and solar design. Agree how the contractors will exchange the information they need.
